The density of camera manufacturers illustrates the succes of the German photographic industry from the late 19th century until at least the 1970s. German camera companies tended to cluster together, the main centres were Dresden, Munich, Nurnberg, Stuttgart and Wetzlar. After WWII Germany was divided into East and West (red stippled line) and several companies were split, including Balda and Zeiss Ikon. Companies in italics produced lenses. Some very small camera makers were left off for clarity, but if your favourite is missing please let me know using the email adress on the front page. Map from Google.
